DEPARTMENT STORE CREDIT CARDS
HAVE GOOD
AND BAD POINTS
Almost all major department stores offer store credit
cards to their customers. This is obviously not only
to persuade you to continue shopping with their store
but also to make some money on the amount of credit
you use.
A department store credit card usually has
a number of offers and benefits associated with it
but it can also have quite high costs too. Whether
one proves beneficial to you will depend entirely on
your current spending and credit card habits.
If you already have a credit card and use it regularly
in the same store then you may find that when you
do the calculations and take into account all of the
benefits and charges, that a department store card
will work out to be a benefit to you.
However, if you currently pay by cash or you use a
number of different stores then it is likely that the credit
card charge will make it too expensive to save you money.
The offers and benefits associated with many store cards
will be reductions on prices and further savings during
sale times. With some stores these aren’t always on
offer and if this is the case you will be sent details
of the offer at the appropriate time.
Also bear in mind that the charges associated with
store charges can be as high as a 20% APR or even
higher in some cases. This means that a 10% reduction
does not make a store card worthwhile unless you are replacing
a credit card.
As with any hunt for the best credit card available, it is
important that you have the details of your current
spending and your current credit card charges
to hand because without this information you will
be blindly making important financial decision.
