CREDIT CARDS FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS
COULD BE THE BEGINNING OF BAD DEBT
Students are finding it much easier to get hold of
credit cards to help them pay for those little unexpected
things in life. However, there are pitfalls to offering
credit cards to students. Most students barely have
enough money to live on as it is without having
to make regular credit card repayments as well but
credit companies are actually banking on this.
They know that a student’s parents will bale them out in
the event that they get into too much debt and
companies who offer credit cards for college students
aim to take advantage of this fact as much as possible.
Instead of a student credit card you may want to
consider giving your son or daughter a secured credit
card or a prepaid credit card. It isn’t possible to get into
debt with either of these but they still act as a backup
plan in case of emergencies.
The main advantage that a student can gain from having
any credit card is to build their credit history for use in the
future. By providing them with a prepaid or secured credit you
can safely offer them this.
To get credit of any sort it is usually necessary to
have some sort of credit history. Even if this credit
history isn’t immaculate, it at least shows you have
borrowed money before and it will hopefully also
show that you have made repayments.
Strangely, the only way to get this credit history is by getting
credit in the first place. A credit card is one such
way to get credit even when a person has no credit
history and so is the perfect stepping stone for your
child or children on their way to buying their first car
or house.
